As with Aidman and Kellogg, Gail Kobe makes her final Gunsmoke appearance in this episode as Ellie. This is also his final appearance on the show, and he has never been nastier. John Kellogg played villains in six different Gunsmoke episodes.

His performance in this story is particularly good as a desperate man who does desperate things. He also played a leading role in the episode "The Money Store" earlier in Season 14. Aidman's involvement with the show goes all the way back to Season 4. Charles Aidman makes his fifth and final Gunsmoke appearance as Riley Sharp/Bill Crawford. Decker agrees, but he has other plans he chooses to keep to himself for the time being.

Decker can go to Mexico and spend the money freely. He makes a bargain with Decker: Sharp will turn over the money if Decker will leave Ellie and Timmy, the son. Sharp is saved by the fact that he knows where the $25,000 is hidden. He thinks he can tell everyone that he was forced to shoot Sharp when Sharp attacked him. When Ellie is forced to tell Decker about her relationship with Sharp, Decker decides to kill Sharp. With Sharp suffering from blood poisoning, Festus decides to leave the farm to go to Dodge and bring back Doc Adams. (He does not know about Ellie's past with Sharp until later.) When Decker rides into Dodge to find more information about Sharp, he learns about his crimes. Decker cannot stand the idea of Sharp being in his house with Ellie tending to him. She has married a cruel, opportunistic man named Henry Decker. Sharp's ex-wife, Ellie thought Sharp - who she knows as Bill Crawford - was dead. By making the injury worse, he correctly reasons that Festus will choose to stop at the farm instead of continuing to Dodge. Sharp knows his ex-wife and young son live in a nearby farmhouse. Sharp has a leg wound that he intentionally makes worse. Sharp reasoned he could spend the prison time necessary and then use the money after he served the sentence, but he found prison life unbearable and managed to escape after eight long years. Sharp and his partners robbed the freight office in Dodge, killed a clerk, and stole and hid $25,000. Them, we'll just have to move in from here.Festus Haggen is picking up a prisoner named Riley Sharp to bring him back to Dodge City to stand trial. Haven't already figured out your ownself. The extradition trip to the train station begins in an atmosphere of the highest tension, as Leona watches from a sidewalk. Matt warns Trevor that "there's going to be one aimed at yours" in return. When Matt gets to Trevor first and takes him in, Trevor warns "there will be twenty shotguns pointed at your head" when Matt sends Trevor off to court for trial. While Matt searches for Trevor (and Trevor orders a hit on Matt), Kitty (who is nursing Leona) struggles with her feelings toward her boyfriend's past girlfriend, finally making an uneasy alliance with Leona. Trevor has learned of Leona's defection and puts out a murder contract on her.

Guilt-ridden, he brings Leona back to Dodge and learns her story: she had drifted after leaving Matt, turning to prostitution and hooking up with various gang members, closing with Trevor himself. To his horror, Matt recognizes the woman as Leona, a woman he knew and loved before he came to Dodge City. The woman is then shown lying in a corner, having accidentally been shot by Matt. The dying outlaw reveals that he left at the request of Trevor's girlfriend, who was also shocked by his cruelty and wishes to leave. The outlaw lives for a few minutes, and Matt asks him why he deserted the Trevor gang. Matt finally kicks in the outlaw's door and shoots him. Matt and Festus shoot it out with an outlaw who was a member of the infamous Jess Trevor gang, particularly notorious for murder and mayhem.
